As always this society continues to ring the changes and the choice of this show, which departs from the norm, was a good, brave decision. Another bold innovation was to incorporate a revolving stage at the Floral Hall, the brain-child of first time Director Kirsty Harrison. This really worked and enabled Audrey 2 to devour it’s victims very quickly!
From the word go the entire cast gave their all, a cast which had been enhanced by the society’s energetic chorus members which gave a great spark to the production.
I thought that David Cameron was ideal as Seymour and he gradually built his relationship with Audrey who was warmly played by Aimee Coulthurst - I really liked her Somewhere That’s Green. Andrea Fairweather was excellent in her interpretation of Mrs Mushnik, in a way holding things together very strongly and having a very good presence on stage. Dominic Hyam was outstanding as the dentist Orin Scrivello and owned the stage as soon as he came on.
The plant was very well manipulated with it’s deep voice supplied by Tim Drage who really showed off his vocal strength. The six singing and dancing Urchins were good and all the choreography was just right for the production. Musical accompaniment was provided by three keyboards and drums which, in spite of some microphone problems, allowed the performers to be heard.
The set, basically inside and outside the flower shop, was well used, utilising the revolve, and the whole evening was extremely enjoyable.
