This production of Little Shop of Horrors was absolutely first class. Congratulations go to Paul Chewins as Director, and Anthony Martin as Musical Director as well as the complete cast, who all gave outstanding performances – 9 of whom you see on stage, plus 2 who are only “revealed” at the end of the show, but are so instrumental to this production.
Michael Riley as Seymour, the unassuming shop assistant and dogsbody who discovers the ‘strange and interesting plant’ which leads to the improvement in his fortunes but also his ultimate downfall, is an experienced performer, singer and dancer and played this role superbly.
Emma Fearnley in the role of Audrey was delicious and ditzy. She has a beautiful singing voice with such clarity in her diction. I just loved her characterisation – she was simply brilliant.
There was also superb support from Julian Freeman as Mushnik, Johnathan Tate in the role of Orin and Paul Rookes as the voice of Audrey II and not forgetting Benjy Miles as the operator of Audrey II.
The three “backing” singers Fiona Spencer as Chiffon, Lisa Gill as Crystal and Vicky Eustace as Ronnette added to this production with their superb renditions of the well known songs. Their harmonies blended beautifully.
The band, under the baton of Anthony Martin are to be congratulated. They made a great sound.
The set was brilliantly designed by Sarah Logan and constructed by Keith Darnborough and team. This use of the revolve was superb, and made the scene changes move swiftly through the story.
A thoroughly brilliant evening’s entertainment - a pity it was not better supported as a production of this quality deserved full houses.
