It was refreshing to see the society attemp a less than popular show, oh so very different, but they tackled it with bags of enthusiasm. The title could be off-putting "Little Shop of Horrors", a comedy rock musical that needed a talented and experienced cast, and they had that in abundence.
It is important in an amateur production to concentrate on the authenticity of props, a fascinating plant that grew and grew to enormous proportions, and a clock that kept the time whipping round and round.
The story revolves around the mysterious plant obtained by Seymour for the downtown Florist's shop that he and Audrey worked in, it looks a little like a "Venus Flytrap" but is much more dangerous. It becomes quite famous as people flock to the shop to see it, but it likes blood! So the story ensues.
The principals had excellent characterizations, Seymour (John Murphy) gave a first rate portrayal, along with the delightfully dippy Audrey (Melissa Harper) who had a first rate singing voice. The wonderfully demented Derntist Orin (Dale Chadwick) the monstrous villian of the show, frightened everyone to death.
The resonant singing voice of Audrey 11, (Christopher Hall) gave depth to his interpretation. The three girls, Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon were spot on with their singing and movement leading the small backing chorus.
It is a shame the Orchestra spoilt the opening of the production, it was far too loud and unfortunately we did lose the words. The second act was much better and hopefully it will continue for the rest of the week.
My sincere congratulations to all involved both on and off stage.
