The theatre in the Meridian Centre was decked with union flags and we, the audience sat at tables enjoying our refreshments – another street party! Then the fun began and Peacehaven Players entertained us right royally with their production (the first since the lockdowns) of Lights Out Over London.
This was a family show with a definite feel good factor. It had its beginnings at the start of the second world war with Arfur Jones and his wife Queenie at home with their daughter Vi who excitedly told them that she would be involved in secret war work.
We then went on to meet their neighbours and friends including members of the Home Guard (the Captain doubling as a Spiv in his spare time!) as well as the Air Raid Warden (Put that Light Out!) and all the scenes were interspersed with well known songs of that period. We learned about the problems that those in that corner of the East End of London were experiencing during the war and also the good fun they had with get-togethers at the Pub and the Palais.
All the characters were so well played and believable with excellent singing and dancing from all. The Director and the cast did a grand job with wardrobe, everyone looking just right for the 1940’s.
Great design for the programme cover – sweets were still rationed when I was very young and I still have my ration book somewhere!
The minimal scenery was ideal and gave a definite 1940s feel to the whole piece.
The show ended with VE day becoming a reality with much celebration from all.
Congratulations to Michelle Roman who directed the production and also wrote the script, and to all involved either on stage, behind the scenes or front of house.
