On a warm summers evening, not everyones idea of fun is attending the theatre. However, for me it was great to escape the heat and the football and be thoroughly entertained for two hours by Wombwell & District Amateur Operatic Society and their production of 'Let's Go To The Music Hall'
The show started for me as soon as I entered the theatre to be greeted by programme and raffle ticket sellers in their costumes. It created the right atmosphere from the off, as well as the sing a long sheet provided to the audience, who doesn't love a good sing song?
As the curtain went up, we were greeted with a stage full of colour. a great backdrop and some stunning costumes. Great work wardrobe department.
To do a revue show, soloists and ensemble have to be on point vocally. Wombwell had no need to worry, as the ensemble and solo singing was top notch. My personal highlights were 'Villa' sung beautifully by Marilyn Sykes, 'I'll take you Home again Kathleen' by Les Smith - Les you did have me worried at first until I realised you forgetting the words were part of the act. The entire World War 1 Section which closed Act 1 was simply stunning and brought a lump to my throat. However the performance of the night for me was 'The Merry Widow Waltz' performed to perfection by husband and wife team, Chris and Ann Wakeford . A beautiful song and emotionally performed.
Special mention must go to John Hanning as the Master of Ceremonies, who kept the audience entertained with his jokes and moved the different sections of the show along with ease. I was still laughing about the ugly sheep on the way home.
I left the theatre, feeling nostalgic and fully entertained. Congratulations to all.
Many thanks for your hospitality, here's to Scrooge
