This show never fails to impress me, particularly the Producer/Choreographer who always manages to come up with a new theme around which to hang the production, whilst still staying true to the period and style of the music of choice for this annual event. A strong showing from the ladies chorus was ever present from the opening numbers, with some pleasing ensemble pieces in particular “Letter from the Front Line”, and this continued throughout the evening. The smaller than usual gentleman’s chorus nevertheless gave us equally agreeable ensemble performances. Supported by a small group of junior members as the “Ovaltineys”, the whole of this active and enthusiastic Society was represented. Soloists of note included Niamh Rose with “No More Soldiering”, Janice Knight with “It’s a Lovely Day Tomorrow” and Marcus Burnside with his monologue “Brahn Boots”. Once again the costumes were well presented and the simple staging for the three settings, an east end blitz scene, the Naafi Café and an upmarket hotel, complimented the musical choices. The usual finale numbers including “London Pride”, “Jerusalem”, “Rule Britannia” and “Land of Hope and Glory” were well received by the ever enthusiastic and flag waving audience and finished off a wonderful evening’s entertainment.
