It is always a pleasure to join the enthusiastic audiences at the Monmouth Comprehensive School, but it must be said that there was an added excitement this time, as their chosen production was “Les Misérables”. Always a theatre favourite, I was eager to see how this young company would handle this iconic story and the portrayal of characters and songs so well known and loved by the theatre going public.

I can only say that from the opening scene to the final bows, I, like the rest of the audience was completely enthralled. It was impossible to remember how young this cast was. The emotion, the strength of the characters and the professional control within their performances, was way beyond their ages and would have graced any professional stage.

Sam North took on the mantle of Jean Val Jean with such emotion and strength of performance and gave outstanding vocal control. Excellent characterisation throughout all the changes of this role.

Javert played by Freddy Potts, was a performance that will stay with me for a long time. A superb rendition of “Stars”. This important and difficult role was played to perfection.

A strong but sensitive performance, as it should be by Frankie Minchella as Marius. Good characterisation with some very strong vocals.

Cosette played by Ruby Jones gave a beautiful performance with excellent characterisation. The rapport between the character of Cosette and Marius gave strength to the stage relationship and the emotion of the musical duets. Well done to both.

A strong performance from Florence Hills as Eponine beautifully acted and with vocal skill full of emotion.

Fantine played by Dilys Barrow gave a very emotional and sensitive performance taking us through desperation, despair, death, and ultimate peace. A lovely portrayal of this central character.

Enjorlas played by Riba Fookes and Gavroche played by Nye Jupp gave excellent characterisation to two central figures within this production. Well done to both

Thernardier and Mme Thernardier played by Will Hevicon and Hannah Bradley, gave us a duo to remember. Wicked and whilly with excellent comic timing, they moved around the stage with constant energy. A superb casting decision and a joy to watch.

With so many characters of note within this particular production, it is difficult to comment on all individuals. I must therefore whole heartedly congratulate you all on both your individual and cast contributions to what has been an exceptional production, clearly showing the outstanding talents that you share.

My greatest respect to your creative team of both staff and students. The success of the show is a tribute to your dedication and hard work.

My congratulations to Musical Director Amy Ritter and the wonderful orchestra, supported by a significant number of student musicians.

Such an all-round wealth of talent. You were all amazing. An outstanding production.
