Talent abounds within the membership of Taunton Thespians and over time those talents are honed and developed. Less than year ago the actor playing Max had never read a script let alone played a principal role and now he shares the lime light with a stalwart of the company as they became ‘Il Stupendo’ and his doppelganger (well only when in full make-up and costume).Lots of comic moments and well-timed delivery from these two actors moved the action along with a selection of beautifully dressed ladies cloying for their attention and portraying the 1930’s woman to perfection. As always the setting was perfectly created and the props enhanced the scene, lighting was appropriate as was the sound, but it was slightly confusing when darling Max began miming the aria and then later so did ‘Il Stupendo’ himself. It is always difficult when actors that are right for the role are not compatible vocally (one a Tenor the other a Bass) especially when the title gives it all away, but this was the only hiccup in a well-directed piece of theatre, especially as later we discovered that ‘Max’ actually has a good voice of his own. May be with fore thought this could have been handled differently but sometimes we don’t discover these things until it is too late, so now you know it won’t happen again. A great play performed with style congratulations to all involved.
