Oh My God you Guys!!! Legally Blonde a show which lives on its energy and rarely pauses to take a breath, and keeps the music coming thick and fast. The characters, particularly the females, require double energy, to comediennes who belt a tune, cut a move and even in some instances get handy with a skipping rope
Legally centers around the antics of the delightful Elle Woods (Georgina Rowland Elliott), a sweet-natured girl who decides to take up a career in law while pursuing her ex-boyfriend Warner (Alfie Murry) to none other than Harvard Law School, hoping to win him back.Yes, Legally highlights Elle’s ‘blondeness and pinkness’ and Georgina is every bit the leading lady. She zips her way through Legally with a great voice, faultless timing and a beautiful characterization of Elle.
Her leading men equally impress – Steven Porter is suitably endearing as the likeable Emmett, Elle’s only supporter and confidante at Harvard, getting a chance to showcase his powerful vocals. Alfie Murry, meanwhile, is charming as her former beau Warner, exuding presence on stage, also offering one of the show’s most convincing accents. Alfie has a perfect musical voice, looking a little young along side Elle, but who cares when you have two great performances.
Elle and Warner's supporting cast include the scene-stealing Karen Martin as Paulette, who is regularly hilarious and superb in this role. Hollie Harris as Brooke gave us a raunchy performance in Whipped into Shape. Molly Knight was suitably cast as the bitchy Vivienne.
Stuart Clements as director, and also putting in a class act as Callanhan, directed Legally to a high standard for the Amateur Theatre in Thanet, with his assistant Donna Clements. Choreographers Amy Simpson and Georgina Rowlent-Elliot (Elle) and MD Phil Hughes, who gave us a load perfectly conducted orchestra, this maybe because of no orchestra pit. This team worked their actors and chorus hard both in dance and music and it showed. This was a near perfect production of Legally.
I have one little gripe: what happened to the sound? It didn’t sound synchronized. Some we heard, some we didn’t. I liked the swift movement of the huge set by the cast, saving us long blackouts…Great!!
I am always greeted very well at Margate, with a superbly designed programme by Paul Cronin. This Legally was a credit to MOS - as I said, a near perfect production. Thank you MOS for inviting me, and good luck with ‘Spamalot’.
