CMP’s Legally Blonde delivered on every single front. It’s rare to see a company where performers can genuinely do it all. Sing, act, dance, and truly believe in what they’re doing. But that’s exactly what was achieved here.
What stood out most was the depth of characterisation across the entire company. From principals through to the ensemble, there was real thought behind every performance. It wasn’t just about hitting the notes or nailing the choreography. It was about telling the story with honesty. That emotional connection came through clearly, and it meant the audience were right there with you from start to finish.
Musically, this show was packed with standout moments. Omigod You Guys set the tone brilliantly from the outset, full of energy and intent. So Much Better was a real turning point and delivered with power and confidence, while Chip on My Shoulder had drive and clarity. Whipped into Shape was hugely impressive in both stamina and control, and Blood in the Water landed exactly as it should, with authority and impact. Gay or European brought a well-judged burst of comedy, and honestly, anything Elle sang was exceptional. Every number felt considered and purposeful.
The staging was phenomenal. The modular set design was clean, clever and incredibly well executed, allowing the show to flow without interruption. I particularly enjoyed the decision for the cast to move set pieces themselves. It kept the pace up and made transitions feel part of the action rather than something separate. The lighting design was equally impressive, with bold pink tones and crisp white accents creating a striking visual identity from the moment we walked in.
There were one or two minor microphone drops across the evening, but honestly, they barely registered and didn’t detract from the overall experience. What stayed with me was the emotional range. Genuine laughter, and at times, real tears. It’s not often you get both so naturally in one show.
I was given a very warm welcome on arrival and had the pleasure of meeting Janet Winn, Chair of CMP, which set the tone for what turned out to be a truly memorable evening. This is a company clearly working at a very high level, and it shows.
