On a cool early October evening, we were given, as we always are, a very warm welcome by Tom, Vara and the FOH team. We took our seats and settled in for what we hoped would be a good evening. And as always with Chesil Theatre this was the case.
The theatre itself is based in a small converted 12th century church that always gives a great atmosphere and the stage design crew (David James and his team) always do a great job with the limited space that they have. A simple internal room, kitchen to the rear, bedroom door to stage left and main front door to stage right, with an impressive and very effective city skyline through the rear window set the scenes very well. The room decor very in keeping with the 1950s/ 1960s. Effective lighting and sound (David James and Malcolm Brown) throughout added to the overall feel.
This was a small cast led by Gary Nicholson as Barney Cashman and the three female cast of Cassandra Powers (Elaine), Jo-anne Conyngham (Bobbi) and Karen Fitzsimmons (Jeanette) all brought great character to their individual roles, all from a differing angle and approach. The diction was great and at a good pace with great confidence, no words seemed to be dropped, and the story was easy to follow. The cast looked as if they were enjoying themselves and this came across well into the auditorium. It appeared to be well rehearsed and well directed by Terry Lohr.
Another great night at Chesil. Thank you for inviting me and I am looking forward to Jekyl and Hyde in November. Congratulations to all, a terriffic evening
