I was delighted to be invited to Henley Players production of Ladies in Lavender a gentle and moving play set in rural Cornwall just post world-war one.
The play was very well cast, and the director had developed all the actors’ characters and relationships such there were some lovely interactions between them. All of the actors understood their characters and their relationships were very natural and I really warmed to them and felt engaged in their stories. I was impressed that a dialect coach had been used which really paid off as the Eastern European accents were very believable.
There was an imaginatively designed and realistic set which incorporated clearly designated areas on the stage to be the bedroom, living room, garden, dining area and shore. Each location was very well dressed with authentic period furniture and properties. The stage was very full, but the director had cleverly ensured that no-one was blocked. The costumes were excellent and in period and everyone looked comfortable and could move easily around the stage.
The lighting was superbly managed with the different locations appropriately lit. There was a good use of spots, and the lighting effects were excellent. The lightening for the storm was particularly effective and combined with excellent sound effects definitely added to the severity of the storm.
Well done on an excellent production.
