To do justice to play with only a handful of characters any play needs to have some good actors in the various parts, well here we had some of the best in Take 2's production of “Lady’s Day”.

The story tells of four friends who all work in a sausage factory in Yorkshire and decide to go to Royal Ascot which is being held in York as a leaving do treat.

As you can imagine to have very experienced actors on stage packing a box of sausages will have some very funny consequences, these were not so much funny as hilarious and I have to say in parts the audience were laughing so much it was at time difficult to hear the following lines, not that this deterred from the enjoyment.

As the group of workmates we had Julie Whitfield, Beverley Jacques, Sue Higgins and Sue Lomas all of whom were able to get the best out of their respective parts. It is not always very funny to watch any actor playing a drunken part, some do have a tendency to go over the top and produce an extremely unbelievable performance, however this did not happen here and all gave a very convincing performance.

Completing the line up of this piece were Cev Barker who not only played the supervisor of the factory but also gave some great characters as other parts from the Racing Commentator, to a Jockey who only weighed six and a half stone, this was met with some very funny lines from the audience!

The last but by no means least actor here was Ken Webster as the love interest of one of the girls with whom he had been having an affair. When Ken entered the stage he played the part of a ghost, not an easy thing to do without it being total comedy and this was not called for in this particular scene which was portrayed extremely well using a spot light pointing directly down on Ken and some good acting on both his and Beverley Jacques’ part to make this believable.

Many congratulations to Julie Whitfield who directed this play and to everyone else involved both on and off stage.
