What do you do when you’ve just performed “Oliver!” and, before that, “The Sound of Music”, thereby collecting a number of talented youngsters who are desperate to perform again? Answer: you form a youth section of your Society, ask the former Captain von Trapp/Mr. Bumble to give them some direction and you have all the right ingredients for a first production.

The end result was a resounding success and all concerned deserve hearty congratulations.  The exuberance and enthusiasm of all the cast were wonderful to see and there were excellent performances from all concerned, notably George Stagnell in the title role and from the duo of narrators, Megan Overton and Ria Williams. The songs are, of course, all intended to be Lloyd Webber’s pastiches on a variety of styles and, although all were well done, I particularly enjoyed the way in which the brothers were able to have fun at the expense of the French in “Those Canaan Days”.  Had they performed this a few months ago, we would surely not be seeing part of the Tour de France in York next year!

York Light Youth, as they are called, have plans for two more productions in 2014 and I am sure neither they nor their audience can wait.
