JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT  is a biblical musical. The narrator tells the story of Jacob and his 12 sons (one of which is Joseph). The narrator begins the story and then the  tale of the coat of many colours comes to life with a show full of familiar show stopping songs ranging from country and western “One More Angel”, rock and roll Elvis style: “Stone the Crows”, to French cabaret “Those Caanan Days” and a fizzling rock and disco medley megamix finale.   They cover jealousy, fratricide, slavery and of course interpretation of dreams.

The scenery was fantastic and greatly added to the overall enjoyment of the show.  It worked well and the changes were slick.  The “last supper” tableau was met with a gasp from the audience and deserves special mention.  The costumes were fantastic, full of colour, vibrant and terrific fun.    There was great attention to detail to hair and make-up as well.  The lighting was delightful (glitter-ball, rainbow lighting), slick, effective throughout and well controlled.  The live music, under the direction of Rachel Glover, proved a great asset to the show and kept the lively music going.  With one or two exceptions, the songs were delivered with clarity and precision.

The evening was packed with dancing Egyptians, sheep and camels. What’s not to enjoy?!  Hazel Baldwin as the Narrator sang with assurance and Jack Baldwin brought charm to the role of Joseph as did Sean Granahan, who was almost unrecognisable as Jacob.  Two of the brothers: Connor McGrane (as Reuben) and Ollie Johnson as Zebulun shone in their roles and were full of charisma and sensational singing.  The whole show was bursting with energy, there was never a dull moment and it was all terrific fun, exciting and entertaining.

Congratulations to Director/Choreographer Nick Brannam and Musical Director, Rachel Glover who drew polished performances from the hugely talented (and large) ensemble with first class choreography.  BATS Next Gen should be proud to add this immensely popular musical to their list of successes.
