Joseph is now celebrating its 50th Aniversary, it was first performed 1st March 1968 in Hammersmith and at that time it was only 15 minutes long as a pop Cantata. It has now been expanded into a full musical and was first performed in the West End in 1973. Taken from the book of Genesis this biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob and Joseph's eleven brothers was brought to life by that famous duo Andrew Lloyd Webber (Music) and Tim Rice (Lyrics).
This magical musical is full of wonderful songs, a Ballad "Those Canaan Days" a Country and Western "One More Angel in Heaven" and Benjamin's Calypso. It also features the memorable "Any Dream Will Do" and "Close Every Door".
Joseph, (Tom Widdop) gave a consummate portrayal of the title role, each song performed to perfection. The whole show was confidently narrated by the vivacous Helen Woodhead. Pharaoh, (Neil Broadbent) presented a good interpretation of Elvis which went down very well with the ladies. Sonya Morris excelled as Mrs Potiphar.
The eleven brothers put a in tremendous amount of work into their characters every solo was beautifully performed, I especially loved "The Canaan Days". They were all having fun really enjoying what they were performing, confident in their roles and a pleasure to listen to.
A chorus of 24 children with ages ranging from 8 to 13 sang and danced delightfully, all backed up by a hard working adult chorus.
A well thought out set with steps at each side leading to a Rostrum across the top with the Orchestra sat underneath, with very effective lighting and a good sound system.
Congratulations on this fantastic production it certainly deserved the standing ovation you received from your captive audience.
