Jesus Christ Superstar with music by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Lyrics by Tim Rice had its Broadway Debut in 1971, a Rock Opera sung throughout with no spoken dialogue. It tells the story of the last week in the life of Jesus Christ begining with the arrival of Jesus and his Disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. The story is tiold by Judas depicting the political and personal struggle between Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot that is not in the Bible.
Jesus (Jake Thompson) showed an inner strength in all the trials he had to suffer, his acting and vocal performance excelled especially in "Gethsemane" and right through to the crucifixion. A superb passionate, portrayal of Judas, (Paul Mathews), took us through the turmoil of his act of betyrayal, and his reaction to the whipping of Jesus through to his death.
Mary (Emma Pyke) brought depth and sympathy to her role, a delightful yet powerful voice in both solos and her duet. The highlight being "I Don"t Know How to Love Him".
Good support from Peter and Simon the Zealot along with the Apostles, it worked quite well using the ladies to make up the numbers, (shortage of men everywhere). Pilate and the Priests showed their expirence along with Caiaphas very menacing as the role demanded.
I enjoyed the performance by Herod in his big number along with his four "Masseurs" bringing a light heartedness to this poignant production.
A very effective set with brilliant lighting, a cast full of confidence, yes, "Everything Was Alright".
Congratulations to Giles and all the company.
