A challenge for any company ‘JCS’ is not the usual fare of a Youth Company whose membership ranges from 6 to 17 years of age. How were these tender flowers going to deal with the ‘adult content’ of the piece and the harrowing final scene of the crucifixion – the answer was with compassion and maturity, in fact it was beautiful. The three leads portrayed their roles with far more understanding than the average adult in their place, and the 14 year old Pilate is a young man to watch as his portrayal of this man completed the puzzle of why this atrocity took place with intensity and clarity. This young company is vocally strong and the musicians supported them admirably. Costume was simple as was the setting and this made you focus on the action throughout. The final scene was thoughtfully staged with Jesus facing upstaged and lit brightly to form a halo of light, surrounded and carried to his resting place the company revealed ‘Jesus’ sat at the foot of the cross … an inspired ending, no blood, no thorns but totally heart rendering.
