It has been quoted 'JCS remains the most protested-against work in the history of musical theatre' due to, quote 'the portrayal of its hero as a fallible figure, uncertain of his own divinity'. Anyone privileged to have seen this production, would surely have due cause to review their thoughts on this statement! The confidence of the impressive cast was never in doubt, along with their fully exposed beliefs in the principles of the characters.

Lighting was superb, following the variations of each scene with what could best be described as bolts of energy following on the heels of the action. Colours sympathetically highlighting each dramatic, celebratory and emotional occurrence.

Cast secured a high level of comprehension and strength in establishing their demanding roles, with vocal ability displayed at its very best. Judas set the tone, opening with a phenomenal, powerful performance, his vocals playing with the clearly felt intensity in every note sang. Mary shone, feeding the audience her feelings through beautifully controlled singing. Not one player in this riveting show, failed to convince the audience of who they were and their role in the story.

The role of Jesus has to be assigned to an actor who has the ability to hold an audience, sing a demanding score and be able to convincingly portray every imaginable different emotion. What a find in Matt Colson! His moving performance stirred every sense of our being, his voice mastering every song, effused with emotion. The crucifixion and following exit through the auditorium left a prolonged silence and audible sobs from amongst the audience.

The director is to be congratulated for leading the society in such a way as to bring her vision alive in such a powerful, evocative and emotive way; this was an extremely thought provoking production.
