Pyper adopted the style of the recent Arena Tour with a contemporary production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s rock opera with most characters in modern dress. A fast moving production with simple scaffolding set enhanced by projection and lighting - the cross remained visible throughout before being raised effectively for the crucifixion scene. Sound, Projection and Acting came together beautifully in the Thirty-Nine Lashes scene as blood splattered the cyclorama.
Andy Scott and Colin Gregg coped well with the vocally demanding roles of Annas and Caiaphas. With Paul Holdsworth and Noel Marsden they sang with menace. Jamie Ewing (Pontius Pilate) was dramatic and vocals faultless. Simon Pyper cameoed as an extremely sleazy King Herod. His featured dancers backed him well in a choreographic highlight. All the disciples worked hard, particularly those doubling up in other roles; Gary Redpath made an impact as Peter, with a lovely solo voice for his denial of Jesus. The role of Judas was played to the limit by Sean Harkin with impressive vocals matched by Orla McCormack as a sensitive and gentle Mary.
Adam Williamson gave a powerful performance as Jesus, owning the stage on every appearance. His iconic piece "Gethsemane" was beautiful and emotional.
Choreography from Clare Donnelly produced real energy. All the crowd scenes were handled well with the auditorium often used to good effect for entrances and exits by the large cast.
Ian Milford's 8-piece band produced an authentic rock sound without overpowering the singers. Everyone was confident in their harmonies and female voices never overpowered the lesser number of males.
