Jesus Christ Superstar tells the biblical story of Jesus Christ's final days of life and is a tremendous challenge to any company.

Guiseley Theatre had been transformed by an impressive set which was used to great effect throughout, so that all of the action was clearly seen.

This was a powerful production that kept the audience spell bound from beginning to end.
The show burst into life with a strong dramatic opening from a full cast who sang expertly throughout, without the benefit of a visible musical director. The small band, hidden high up on a platform in the wings, provided a perfect accompaniment.

Jesus of Nazerath (Nigel Passey) gave an outstanding performance and his delivery of “Gethsemane” showed off his tremendous vocal range.  He played the role with such sensitivity.  Excellent support from Judas Iscariot (Paul Matthews), who captured brilliantly his tortured soul.  All of his musical numbers showed off his incredible vocal range.  There was a beautiful performance from Mary Magdalene (Nicole Connor) who was just perfect for this role.  Her musical numbers were all superbly sung, but my particular favourite was the duet “Could We Start Again Please?” with Peter (Elliott Mathews).

The production was filled with good supporting characters.  Some may have been concerned in the casting of women in the roles of Pilate (Lisa Gill), Herod (Shirley Broadbent) and Annas (Vicki Garbett), but their performances unquestionably enhanced this excellent production.

Words cannot describe this poignant, harrowing story packed with action and told with conviction, truly a credit to the production team of Director, Giles Atkinson, Choreographer, Amy Horton-Atkinson and Musical Director, Neil Balfour.  They must be congratulated on this, their first production for Guiseley Amateurs.

Every single member of the company was so well rehearsed, knew exactly what they were doing and was able to perform with such confidence.  Congratulations to everyone involved.
