The action of this play by Colin Barrow takes place in the communal area of a woman’s section of a prison. The female prisoners are all of senior ladies' age and have all committed crimes (self inflicted) to be imprisoned and cared for at the expense of the tax payer, rather than paying high residential home fees. Now imprisoned, they’re still law breaking by scams, forgeries and producing illegal substances in the prison grounds. The prison staff, a younger section of cast, are kept on her toes with the luxury style of living the inmates all wish to receive.

This comedy is very tongue-in-cheek and is a farcical send up of the prison and inmates. All of the characters in Jail Birds gave us great comedic moments to the audience. Adam Bicknell directed this play with comedy foremost and it worked, his well-chosen cast did him proud.

Emma: Janine Hall is a superb actress and this part suited Janine perfectly. Jane (Jean Span): acting ability to this part is addictive. Mary (Kath Wood): perfect silence but a windy performance. Jenny (Pat Fitzsimons) a good motherly tart for anyone, and got on well with Lewis (Andy Wise), when on the illegal brew by Sandra(Rebecca Brown). This cast knitted together well and well done to the older cast members with difficult parts to remember. Also, the young ones took this on board and blended well with them. It was a big cast, so excuse me if you're not mentioned, but you all helped.

“Jail Birds” was another success for Avenue Theatre Productions.
