I always approach this pantomime with high expectations as it is such an annual treat, and this year was no exception. From the opening safety announcement, performed by a cast member, to the closing curtain, there was great attention to detail.

The opening number 'Colour my world' was certainly well chosen, as this was an extremely colourful pantomime, with chorus dressed in bright costumes, in front of an equally colourful set. The opening set of central wishing well, with houses at each side, placed us firmly into a fairy tale, and this larger-than-life theme pervaded throughout. The opening number was performed with huge energy and enthusiasm by this young cast, performing the sometimes difficult choreography with confidence, ease and panache. Great discipline and maturity was shown by this young ensemble.

The 'baddie', Rancid, and Fairy Thistledown got the story going in traditional pantomime style. Other Principal characters were introduced, and a combination of good directing and a nice script ensured that each character was different and distinctive, each bringing a new energy to the stage. Daisy the Cow was a huge crowd-pleaser, and the early milking scene worked well.  Dopey Dora relished her role and demonstrated some excellent comic delivery.  Pace was good throughout. The addition of some jokes about the St Austell Planners was very topical and well received by the audience.

Singing was confident, with some nice harmonies, particularly in the love duets, and there was a nice mix of music, including an instrumental dance routine in the market scene. There were some well-judged novelty scenes: the 'sand dance' in the Giant's castle, the courtship dance of the cow and bull, and a Benny Hill style chase which was varied and energetically performed. The sword-fight was performed convincingly. The ballet in Act 2 was charmingly performed by the Fairy and the junior chorus.

Scene changes were quiet and efficient. Props were well handled and suitable for the genre. Costumes were well fitting and colourful. Wigs were excellent, as was the make-up. The Giant's costume was clever and convincing, as were the over-sized furnishings and props. The sets were well thought out and constructed, and the use of star-cloths worked well. The beanstalk both grew and fell convincingly. Lighting was appropriate throughout and pyrotechnics were well placed and well timed.

The finale costumes were suitably lavish, and the finale song of 'If I Ruled The World' was an unusual choice, but very nicely sung, providing a rousing end to a lovely evening of entertainment.
