This was my first visit to a Whitkirk Pantomime as Area Rep., and I was not disappointed!
Whitkirk Arts Guild presented a good, old-fashioned pantomime, with a few modern and quirky moments thrown in for good measure. Excellent principals made the most of their characterisations; rounded performances from Charlotte Hodge, Matthew Jameson, Lee Wallace, Laura Wilkinson, Helen Thomson, Deb Greaves, Nick Jackson, Matthew Jackson, Chris Burdis-Green and three performers operating Daisy the Cow; Jane Gulliver, Sue Newsome & Sean Robinson.
The chorus ably supported the principals and, as always, the technical team, set, costumes, props, wardrobe and stage crew were of a very high standard. The sets and costumes were bold and bright - I do like a 'positive' look and from the audience's point of view, everything was just right.
There was plenty for the audience to boo and cheer - comic timing is very important for pantomime - I especially liked the role of the Narrator, who kept the audience well-informed on how to behave - she reminded me of 'Edna' in 'Emmerdale' - bossy and interfering!
The directors, Louise and Lynn, produced a fast-paced show: Charlotte, as choreographer, made sure movement suited the company (and she also played Jack!). If I had any small criticisms, it would be the choice of accent for Jack & the Fairy - although a brilliant Liverpudlian, it was hard to understand all the dialogue. I also wished the Queen could have had more glitter, a fancy hairstyle and a huge crown! None of this detracted form the overall performance. The choice of 'Daisy, Daisy' as the song sheet was superb, with the young and quite elderly audience singing their hearts out!
Once again,my congratulations to the entire company; Community Theatre at it's best!
