Glantawe Theatre Company’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk was a thoroughly entertaining and well executed pantomime, delivering all the charm, humour, and spectacle audiences expect from this much-loved classic.
At the heart of the show was Erin Maggs as Jack Trott, who brought warmth, sincerity, and excellent stage presence to the title role. Maggs struck the perfect balance between innocence and determination, making Jack instantly likeable and easy to root for. Heather Bradley was equally impressive as Princess Jill, combining poise and strong vocals to create a confident and engaging performance.
Russ Rees as Dame Trott was undoubtedly one of the standout performers. Rees demonstrated impeccable comic timing, commanding the stage with effortless charisma and delivering laughs consistently throughout the performance. His rapport with the audience was exceptional, embodying everything a great pantomime dame should be. Kai Jones as Billy Trott, bringing infectious energy and humour that complemented the central storyline beautifully.
Tim Barrell’s King Timorous was wonderfully characterised, providing both authority and gentle comedy, while Lee Bentley was great as the fearsome Giant Blunderbore, creating a convincing and entertaining villain whose presence added real excitement to the production. Becci Wakeman gave a strong and memorable performance as Mrs Blunderbore, matching the Giant’s imposing presence with confidence.
Leah Dalton brought grace and sparkle to Fairy Blossom, guiding the story with warmth and clarity, while Katie Patton impressed in the dual roles of Buttercup and Clementine, demonstrating versatility and strong performance skills. Keira Morgan-Pugh also contributed effectively as Clementine, and Jane Levi delivered a solid performance as Clarissa, helping to round out an excellent supporting cast.
Behind the scenes, Director Anthony Evans deserves significant praise for delivering a production that felt polished, well-paced, and full of energy. Musical Director Danni Gravell ensured the musical elements were performed to a high standard, with strong vocals and cohesive musicality throughout. The choreography by Lowri Paynter was lively, creative, and well-executed, enhancing the visual appeal of the show and making full use of the cast’s talents.
Technically, I am always very impressed with Glantawe’s set, lighting and sound. A huge amount of effort goes into maximising space and therefore the result is always excellent!
Overall, Glantawe Theatre Company should be immensely proud of this production. It was a joyful, funny, and engaging pantomime that showcased the dedication and talent of everyone involved. From strong principal performances to good direction, music, and choreography, Jack and the Beanstalk proved to be a fantastic evening of entertainment and a true celebration of local theatre.
