I must be one of the few people who has not seen the recent big screen version of "Into the Woods". Until I saw this fabulous production all I knew was that it was a musical by Stephen Sondheim I was eagerly looking forward to seeing the MTS and during the week I had seen a rather odd review on social media which ended by saying "you will either love it or hate it". Well without any doubt, my Wife and I certainly loved it!
From the start I was enthralled and fascinated. The music and the singing although very complexed was amazing. It was a refreshing change for the sound balance to be near perfect throughout the performance. The simple set proved to very effective with the excellent lighting and I loved the wonderful costumes, wigs and footwear.
I thought that the whole ensemble were excellent, everyone gave their heart, a real team event and I wondered, how on earth they managed to perform to such a high standard, in the extreme heat of the theatre, on such a hot summer evening. The characterisation by each member of the company was superb, my favourite was "Little Red Riding Hood" and my wife was very impressed by "Milky White the Cow".
We often judge the success of a show on the balance sheet at the end of the week and because they were too many empty seats in the auditorium, sadly the company may suffer from a financial point of view. In my opinion this was an outstanding production which was equal to any of the professional touring companies that we see in our local area.
