ROS assembled a wonderfully strong cast for the solo singing and acting needed for Sondheim’s fairy stories and made light of the scenic difficulties and absence of chorus with mobile stage-height trees to give the claustrophobic atmosphere shifted on and off stage by a chorus of wood sprites (also usefully employed on other stage roles) and static ones on the proscenium for Rapunzel’s Tower and the tree to shoot the Giant. Great inventive work by the Director and the hidden MD.
