Sondheim’s music and lyrics are often complex and demanding, so some societies shy away from his shows for these reasons. Newtown MTC coped well with this music score. Into the Woods is a cocktail of fairy tales interwoven to produce a very interesting piece of comedy and real drama.
It was evident that the cast of fantasy characters had been carefully selected with versatile Andrew Bond as Narrator/Mysterious Man carefully secreted in the corner of the stage, setting the scenes and bringing the correct intonation to the script. His experience and his pure athleticism with his change of character and costume from Narrator to Mysterious Man was carried out without fault. Emma Breese gave a chilling portrayal as Witch. Two of the central characters were The Baker and the Baker’s Wife, confidently played by Gareth McMurdo and Bev Dunkley respectively. They are told by the witch they have to bring her four items, thus enabling them to have a child. The story unfolds as each of the items are produced and different fantasy characters emerge in the story. Little Red Riding Hood – Abby Brunt, Jack – Lex Urry complete with Milky White his cow – Becky Gunson, Cinderella - Rosie Smith. and Rapunzel – Josephine Bowen. Each of the characters gave self-assured performances. Chris Clarke was spot on as Jack’s Mother and, with Aimee Breakwell and Alex Austin keeping the comedy on track as Florinda and Lucinda respectively. Amber Deacon was convincing as Giant together with Dave Robinson and Mark Ward as Wolf 1 & 2. There were so many characters in this cast, unfortunately I cannot mention everyone. I must however, mention Rob Jones as Prince Valiant and Adam Jones as Prince Charming – beautiful duets, blending well together – a highlight.
The cast of Principals were well supported by an enthusiastic chorus of Birds, Trees and other fantasy characters. I particularly liked the set, most impressive with each fairy tale book opening at the appropriate time revealing the characters within, superb Set Design by Bridget Wallbank, Scenic Artist Julieann Heskin and the Set Construction Team. Great work, as usual, by the very competent Stage Crew. Lighting spot on one or two missed entrances with Sound. Superb costumes, make-up and hair styles. Well done Newtown MTC for attacking a difficult show which raised your game.
