Presented as an open stage with a rear platform this simple set create a good base onto which the large ensemble appeared to tell this fairy tale with a sting in its tail. This Sondheim and Lapine musical is known to be difficult and this young company approached it with gusto and passion and this was evident from the start. Casting was strong with powerful vocals from the key characters brought the tale to life. The Baker and the Which, both of whom showed great maturity throughout, led the company admirably, supported by the Baker’s sweet an pretty wife, gentle Cinders, adorable Jack and feisty Little Red. The Monty Python take on the Princes was hysterical and both these young men showed great poise and confidence while in their ‘Agony’. Keeping some minor control on the story the Narrator showed great composure and microphone technique. The minor characters also caught the eye, the Chamberlain and Cinderella’s family all had nice stage presence. ‘Your Fault’ and 'Last Midnight’ both extremely difficult pieces were handled with aplomb and deserved the rapturous applause. Costumes were very brothers Grimm, although Little Red was rather mature in her corset, and these suited the staging of the production. Some really eye catching lighting effects during the more dramatic numbers created an exciting and mysterious atmosphere were worked beautifully. Another quality production by Merriman which I am sure will stay in the memory for a while ... well done all concerned.
