It may have been parky in Penarth, but it was Hot Mikado on the Paget Room stage. Vic Atkins created a very colourful and lively production of the up tempo swing, jazz and calypso version of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic. Under the baton of Ben Davies, the pit swung and the band obviously enjoyed playing this innovative and exciting score.
An enthusiastic cast and company relished the numbers littered with upbeat themes and off beat rhythms. The set supplied by Theatremask was perfectly suited to the stage working well as this production moved the ensemble at great pace, while the costumes by ACE gave the right feel and a colourful spectacle. The cast led by the Big Cat of Japan, (Nick Pratt), gave fine performances and the three maids certainly hit the right notes throughout. It was refreshing to see such a blend of ages creating the toe tapping routines that kept this show moving. Well done Vic and Penarth, the audience certainly got behind this fun production on the night I attended.
