‘Home I’m Darling’

Exmouth Players.

Thursday 3rd July 2025 7.30PM. Blackmore Theatre. Exmouth.

The Blackmore Theatre is a great venue and I have always found my visits to be  friendly, warm, and welcoming. This was no exception, and it was lovely to meet up  with a NODA Summer School friend too.

‘Home I’m Darling’ is a play that I have read previously and enjoyed so it was great  to have the opportunity to come and see a production and how the Exmouth team  would present it to their audiences.

A lovely open, cleverly balanced, split set, that was a perfect 1950’s housewife’s  proud domain. A kitchen of brilliant yellow and red with gingham embellishments,  every item perfectly placed, gleaming and polished. I have every reason to believe  that between each show you cleaned behind the ‘fridge, the glass cupboard, and the  magnificent oven!

The living room side, a little more muted in the palette but again with a lovely array of  suitable 1950’s furniture and décor. Flying ducks and, of course a Green Lady  portrait hanging above the drinks trolley. The whole impression gave the visual  introduction into the action that was about to begin.

Not wanting to give anything away about the beginning and the ‘not what you are led  to believe’ twist that the plot gives once we are into the story, I will say that I thought  it was extremely well done. As we progressed throughout the entire piece, I put my  notebook down, sat back and just thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Everything was of the highest standard. Lighting, sound, some wonderfully  appropriate music leading us through and costuming that was spot on for each  character.

The characterisations were well observed, and dialogue delivered with a perfect  audibility. Some wonderful facial expressions and physicality that helped to weave  through the story. I was particularly impressed with the use of pauses, some helping  brilliantly to deliver the awkwardness of the situations that were portrayed. I found every actor across the cast to be totally believeable and the teamwork was  evident. The pace was well balanced, I enjoyed every minute.

Thank you for your kind hospitality and congratulations on delivering a play that was  a delight from start to finish.

Kind Regards

Jane Burt
