The story of ‘Hobson’s Choice’ is a classic piece of literature and is on the syllabus for GCSE thus it has stood the test of time, but as a play it is dependant on well drawn characters particularly in the leading roles. Overall the characters were very well performed. Although I missed a few cameo roles at the beginning. The weight of this play is carried by two characters Maggie Hobson and Henry Horatio Hobson her father and the casting here was perfect. Maggie’s pinched features and upright stance immediately established her as a bossy, but intelligent ‘old maid’. She was fiery and determined and it was lovely to see her ‘soft side’ in the latter stage of the play… an excellent actress who defined her role and played with skill and perception. The tour de force from Henry Hobson was a delight… as he never once let up on his tricky character. With so many lines to remember he has my admiration for performing a tremendous role, very well done. The supporting principals each played their roles well and their colourful characters added to the play as the story unfolded. I was impressed with the scenery, the less is more approach worked perfectly. The costumes were delightful and worn well by all members of the cast.
The direction of the play was first rate, the story moved at a good pace and everyone appeared to have a good understanding of their role. Pictures created and positions on stage were good and the long chunks of dialogue were made interesting by characters changing position on stage and really showing intense emotion.
This was an enjoyable story and an excellent demonstration of an old classic. Your small audience certainly appreciated the humour; it was just a pity that the average age of your audience was quite mature as it does appeal to every age group. Well done to everyone concerned.
