HMS Pinafore is quite a short operetta and like many G&S’s needs to progress with pace and energy, which the cast achieved. The directing design brought interest into the scenes and fully engaged the audience. The groupings of the actors were very good and worked very well for the singing and the action (no straight lines!!). The stage at the theatre is quite small, but it never looked crowded, and the blocking worked very well with good use of the raised section of the boat with the tiller and mast to add interest to the blocking and levels of movement. The choreography was lively, energetic, and visually engaging. The steps for the sailors were fitting for the naval setting, and they participated enthusiastically. The dances for the women were light and gay which perfectly suited their roles and the style of the operetta.
The principals all gave strong vocal performances singing with expression and lovely tone. They had developed interesting characters which were believable and their interactions were very natural. The chorus of sailors, sisters, cousins and aunts, although small in number, provided strong support throughout, both vocally and dramatically. The singing as always was good with some lovely harmonies which enhanced the musical richness of the production.
