I was delighted to be invited to Newbury YoungStar’s production of High School Musical. It was lovely to see so many young people up on stage and they really brought this popular Disney Musical to life. The principals gave great performances and were well supported by the ensemble made up of school clubs.
The director had concentrated on making the whole performance light-hearted, fun and thoroughly entertaining. He created some excellent characters and worked on their relationships which came over brilliantly. It was great to see such a large group of mixed age performers working so well together and enjoying themselves. The Musical Director had clearly worked hard with both the principals and ensemble to produce good vocals and really got the best out of these youngsters. They were supported by a great band and the balance of the instruments, and the singers was spot on. The choreography was extremely effective, and the choreographer had trained the cast well so that the dances were all beautifully synchronised. I was particularly impressed with the clever dance moves for Get’cha Head In The Game’ which incorporated basket balls into the choreography. The set was simple, but the set pieces were effective and the use of co-ordinated costumes and hair styles for each school group was very effective.
Well, done on a really great performance, it was clear that everyone was enjoying being on stage and having fun. I look forward to your next show.
