This was a fairly obvious choice for York Light Youth performers who made an excellent job of it with their abundant enthusiasm evident from the start. Preparations for the school performance of “Juliet and Romeo” reflect the original Shakespeare and its various re-creations with opportunities for clashes between the differing cliques within the school as basketball captain Troy falls for the more academic Gabriella.  Christian Mortimer and Megan Forgan handled their respective parts with assurance and I particularly enjoyed the way in which their voices blended so well in their duet.  Unlike Shakespeare, the writers here opt for a happy ending as a possible conflict between a basketball game and a vital audition is resolved to the satisfaction of all involved.

There were times when the American accents made it a little difficult to make out all the words, both spoken and sung, but, this apart, this was an enjoyable evening and another successful production following their debut with “Joseph” last year.  The group will perform “Les Miserables” later this year to complete a trio of very differing musicals, thus enhancing their rapidly widening experience of the genre.
