YMTC’s Taunton Group burst on to stage and hit the ground running! High School Musical was the ideal vehicle for these enthusiastic performers, from the youngest to the oldest you could really feel their collective heart beat of nerves and excitement! This was a fast moving visual show and contained a lot of stylized choreography, both in dance and basketball. Skills! Double casting is a challenge for any company and for some it can leave them with a feeling of déjà view! Not quite certain where they should be or if they have a line!
YMTC have a wealth of talented young performers and actors within their company. From the youngest to the more seasoned performers it was evident that they were a team. It was great to see how each member of the ensemble had found their own identity, those individual characters really contributed to the believability of the work. There are some very diverse characters to portray! Highlights of the production were Miss Darbus’s acting class, Great earth worm! The refectory scene complete with crème Brule! And Troy and Gabriella’s sensitive scene on the roof garden. Not a dry eye in the house!
Overall Company musicality, singing, and accents were strong. Unfortunately some of the principal’s dialogue got lost when turning upstage, I think a little more work on dialogue and diction may have helped. Costumes had been well selected and complemented production as did the simple but effective set. Overall this was a fun show for all on and off stage.
