The production was energetic and well executed from the opening number. Advanced dancers and singers ensured the show began strongly, maintaining a lively pace throughout. It was heartening to see newer cast members fully committed to their performances. Despite the logistical challenge of placing so many students on stage, it was managed efficiently, allowing everyone their moment in the spotlight.
Individual performances by the Principals and second Principals were impressive. Sharpay, portrayed by Lily-Rose D, delivered a strong characterisation with expressive facial gestures that enhanced her role. Troy, played by Kai J-C, stood out with his excellent singing voice and nuanced depiction of a gentle side to the ‘jock’ stereotype. Gabriella, performed by Lily H, offered a striking contrast to Sharpay, and her singing voice complemented Kai’s beautifully in their duets, which were well received by the audience. Ryan, played by Isaac M, started tentatively but quickly found his stride, particularly shining in his dance scene with Sharpay.
There was a considerable number of secondary Principals, whose contributions deserve recognition. Nathan F (Chad) delivered a nice performance with good singing. Xander B (Zeke) brought a cheeky energy and excellent characterisation. Eva H (Taylor) gave strong support with a commanding stage presence. Lila B (Kelsey) impressed with her character work, notably singing under her breath during Troy and Gabriella's duet, as a true composer might. Sofia S (Ms Darbus) gave a powerful performance, though should be mindful of using a clipboard, which occasionally obscured her face during dialogue. Shae D (Coach Bolton) also offered a nice performance, with particularly effective facial expressions.
The Ensemble worked diligently, and the dancing was outstanding. The student choreographers, Lola G, Lily P-W and Ava T, deserve praise for tailoring choreography to the cast’s abilities, resulting in a performance that was both accessible and impressive.
The level of student involvement in the creative aspects of the production was particularly notable. It was wonderful to see students take significant roles in creating the show whilst also performing. Costumes were effective and the scenery, though simple, was highly impactful. Technical elements such as lighting and sound were managed by Monto Events, a company run by current and former students, further keeping the production in-house. The technical team succeeded in cueing lights and microphones perfectly; a feat not often achieved even in adult productions.
Overall, this was a fantastic show, and the audience’s appreciation was evident. As this was my first Shenfield production, I look forward to attending more in the future.
