I remember being impressed by the standard of the society’s concert in 2018 and this one did not disappoint at all, in fact it was probably better.
The producers had obviously put a great deal of thought into a very good mix of songs from musical shows and films including High Society, Anything Goes, Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia and Rent.
Once again a small cast of 12, including two men and some new ladies, were worked extremely hard and there were plenty of words to learn.
The highlight for me was ‘Cell Block Tango’ from Chicago and the staging of it was well thought out and executed.
The ladies obviously had a good deal to do in this show but the men held their own with solos and duets. It was also pleasing that the society’s new members were given the chance to shine which will have done them no harm at all.
I enjoyed the choreography and the costumes and lighting were effective.
All the numbers were performed to backing tracks, which can be far from easy without an MD standing in front. They can also be of a pace that is rather slower than would be preferred. Most of the cast were miked up and it could perhaps be said that at times the projection levels from some of the team were not as strong as they might have been.
However, when a society works against the odds, it is wonderful to see the effort that it puts in to keeping things going. There was a full house when we saw the show and I hope this continued for the remaining performances. They deserved it for what was probably the best pure concert they have done for a while.
