For some of us ‘Happy Days’ the TV series was a must watch teatime TV treat in the later 1970’s early 80’s and part of our teen culture although set in the 1950’s. Wellington is one of the first Amateur companies to bring the production to the stage and they did with gusto. On entering the auditorium the stage looked like a giant juke box with the show title glowing out. One of the real highlights of the show was the simply but highly effective set; this had been thought through meticulously and was manipulated and changed by the cast members with style on a par with a professional production – extremely impressive. Casting was strong Fonzi and Pinky leading the way with great rapport and strong vocal attack. Richie, Ralph and Potsie joined by Chachi and the Malachi brothers all brought character, fun and musicality to their roles and they all bounced off each other well. Richie’s sister Joanie and girlfriend Lori-Beth were not going to be outshone and smiled, sparkled; I particularly liked Lori-Beth’s sweet sassiness and perfect dress sense. The ‘grown ups’ were all nicely drawn, Marion in particular encapsulated the time and style of the 50’s, a highlight was the trio of Marion, Joanie and Pinky during ‘What I dreamed last night’. I hope to see this lady being challenged with more principal roles in the future as she captured everyone’s heart. Musically this is a big show and Richard controlled his orchestra well although sound levels were an issue for some audience members, but I didn’t find this the case. Choreography was thoughtful and completely correct for the time period, a little more speed and attack would have been the icing on the cake, but that’s a minor complaint. This show was a real treat ,with skating waitresses and a real motorbike, the team spirit was so evident and no one left without a smile on the face …thank you for a fantastic flash back to the 50’s.
