Director Michael Hellawell's well-groomed production was both bright, brash and at times quite brilliant and complimented by choreographer Adele Taylor's excellent razor-sharp routines, this show positively bristled.
Almost across the board the cast was packed with talented performers and I'm certain the near sell-out audiences relished the show as much as my wife and I did at the start of the run.
Suze Trim gave a terrific performance as central character Tracy Turnblad, with a bubbly portrayal excelling in the musical numbers, while Hugh Raine was polished to perfection as Corny Collins..
Rob Pogson teased every little nuance out of the comedy as Tracey's mother Edna (will someone please explain why this character is always played by a man), as did Craig Squance as father Wilbur. Danielle Williams was delightfully dizzy as Tracey's partner in crime, the scatterbrained Penny Pingleton.
Newcomer George Griffiths impressed both vocally and with some accomplished moves as the love interest Link Larkin and there was solid support elsewhere from the experienced Rebecca Cawthra as the petulant Amber Von Tussle, Adrian Russell as Seaweed J Stubbs and Hayley Taylor as Amber's pushy mother, Velma.,
There was a nice little cameo from youngster Tia Mills as Little Inez, with further backing from Bernadette Baptiste and Samantha Griffiths.
A great team of dancers, council members and dynamites ensured this Hairspray was a guaranteed hit and one that Huddersfield Musical Theatre Company can feel very proud.
