Set in the midst of the child evacuees boarding the train from London to take them to an uncertain future when World War 2 broke out, Blackwood Little Theatre brought a moving recreation of events with this nostalgic well chosen play, adapted from a book and finally a world famous film.
With vintage costumed cast and authentic ARP warden, Steve Dobson to take the audience to their seats, the nostalgia of the 1940’s was evident throughout the theatre.
One of the most important themes of this successful book by Michelle Magorian, written from her Mum’s wartime experiences as a nurse in London during the war in a children’s burn’s unit, and famous iconic film is friendship, especially the relationship between Mister Tom, (Rob Murphy)and the boy,William(Sam Standing). William is taken to live with Mister Tom his guardian, at times questioned by the authorities who question if he is capable of caring for this young boy, now an orphan, yet all is soon resolved and William can call Tom, Father.
The two characters are bonded by the shared experience of loss and loneliness which unites both characters. The roles were played sensitively with great realism, by these actors.
Another character well played was the tragic Zach, enthusiastically played by Megan Parsons. Of the sixteen members of the cast everyone played their part and some played multiple parts, to make this successful drama. Sammy the Dog well played by Geoff Yates, a faithful dog who lives with Tom and is a much needed friend to William, as he tries to adjust to this new life far from home.
One of the most moving scenes was when Mister Tom gives Zach’s bike to William, when Zach is tragically killed in an air raid.
Standing out for his acting versatility Rhydian Edbow gave fine performances of Billeting Officer/Policeman/ Vicar and Louise Elliot shone as Mrs Hartidge /Gladys
A well designed and created set designed by Neil Elstone depicting the wartime atmosphere with attention to detail, and is always prominent in any production by this company.
Congratulations to the production team.
This is a compassionate story of final hope and kindness which overcomes sadness and grief.
Thank you Blackwood Little Theatre for your kind hospitality.
