This was my first visit to the Playhouse and what a delightful place to put on a production. The upstairs of the old chapel provided a lovely intimate feeling for this play. The action took place in a charity shop and you almost felt that you could pop in and have a look round. I love an open set where you can spend time before the start to see what's going on and really get a feel for things to come. A lot of thought had gone in to the props, obviously someone knew their charity shops.
The story centres around Susan, played by Rachel Smith, a mother whose husband has left her for a youger model. She is filling in some of her time working in the charity shop and has become good friends with Frazer, played by Michael Thorne. The third member of staff is Marjorie, played by Carol Bailey, a very efficient upper class manageress.
Michael and Carol had various other roles and you had to admire how well they slipped from one character to another with such speed. They were very clever in bringing out the different characters and sometimes you had to look twice to check who was who. The fourth member of the cast was David, played by Steve Rouse, a widower who was gradually clearing out after his wife's death.
The four cast members worked well together and although we had plenty of laughs they also brought out the sadness in their lives. It was a happy ending for some but not for everyone.
This was a well directed production which gave the audience first class entertainment. I certainly look forward to their next event.
