The best way to describe this pleasing production would be the word ‘Charming’, an unobtrusive setting worked well for the performers with costumes, wigs and accessories that enhanced the production. Lit delicately the small but tuneful company moved as an ensemble as it would be expected in this style of piece. The Gondoliers and their pretty ladies set the opening scene with smiles and Antonio, Marco and Giuseppi had just a touch of cheekiness along with lovely vocals. Giggly ladies led by the Tessa and Gianetta graced the stage in shades of gold moving and singing with delight. The paired four carried along the romance beautifully and once the confusion began the men became smug and yes the ladies certainly became more and more agitated, some lovely physical moments within the scenes brought laughter from the audience which was engaging and fun.
The Duke and Duchess of Plaza – Toro had great comic wit and timing which grew through the performance, the Duchess has a face that spoke a thousand words by a lift of an eyebrow a real highlight in the comedy stakes. Our hearts went out to sweet little Casilda who proved she actually was quite sassy and kept her own when faced with her plight, she matched well with Luiz and underplayed their passion nicely. The Don truly made an impact summoning up uncomfortable emotions with his solicitous manner, the girls all looked afraid of him and those naughty eyes.
Highlights were many but the Cachucha as an ensemble piece was certainly high on the list, vocals were in the main very strong, TAOS showed their versatility and gave the audience a treat.
