~~When I entered the theatre for this show I mentioned to someone it was over 30 years since I performed the role of Jesus in this show, I was quickly reminded it was actually 40 years ago!
I cannot understand why Godspell is not done more often; this show has some great numbers, really good dialogue and is both funny and sad at the same time.
Of course you do need to have a good cast to be able to perform this show and to get the best out of it and I have to say Geoff Whitfield had the best cast here who were able to tell this story and perform all the songs.
It was very inventive of Geoff to set this in a Circus ring and have all the characters as circus performers and this worked a treat with the start of the show having Jesus, played to perfection by Jake Steers, sitting high above the stage on a very slim pipe, Jake very quickly did a somersault to get to the stage deck and begin what was a perfect show.
All the songs, as I have said were performed with ease by the strong cast and I did not see a weak point in the show at all in fact the pace was so fact moving I would liked to have seen it again to take everything in.
Alongside Jake was another Jake, Jake Lomas who played Judas and again Jake was able to do this with ease using every ounce of energy and expertise to get the most out of this part, which was very evident when he sang All For the Best with Jesus, this involved the majority of the cast and almost brought the house down.
Another show stopper in this show is Day by Day which is sung by Robin, played to the full by Ellie Cooper, again this as with most of the songs in this piece involves all the cast and once again was enjoyed by everyone there.
There is not enough room here to mention everyone involved but needless to say, as I have mentioned previously there was not a weak point in this show and everyone played their respective parts to the full.
Congratulations to all involved in the excellent production.
