“Godspell” set in the flower power era of the late sixties, is structured on a series of parables taken from the Gospel of Matthew. It was originally written for a cast of Ten, Jesus , Judas, and Eight non biblical characters, who sing and act out the parables. Later it was adapted to include a full ensemble in many of the musical numbers.
This P & P production was absolutely fabulous throughout. It was superbly directed with slick and lively choreography, it had some wonderful comedy and the singing was excellent throughout. Each of the “Ten” gave well delivered individual performances . I did think that the portrayal of Jesus was absolutely outstanding . The “Ten” were supported by a large, ensemble who produced a great sound, they were all very enthusiastic and looked to be really having the time of the life.
The superb small band were located at the rear of the stage and camouflaged by the simple ,but very effective, set.
I felt that I was transformed to a Sunday school in the Californian sunshine where the teachers were all eccentric, and sightly whacky students. However I could understand that anyone who did not know the stories of the bible, may have found that the storyline was difficult to follow.
The last time I saw a production of “Godspell” was over forty years ago and after seeing this production I wonder why it is not more popular with amateur companies.
I thought that this was another excellent show from this very talented company, Yet another great achievement for Poole and Parkstone productions, congratulations to all concerned
