This thought provoking musical, usually performed by a handful of actors was interestingly and successfully undertaken by a very large cast of principals and ensemble players. My one reservation was that during the first act the stage was almost constantly populated by the entire company and it was sometimes quite difficult to distinguish who was speaking or singing as there were so many ‘bodies’ on the stage. Act two was less ‘busy’ but lost none of its impact for that. This was very much an ensemble production but of course there was also a strong line-up of principal players who gave some outstanding and remarkably mature performances.
Some outstanding ensemble work was on display. Everyone was well drilled and played their parts with conviction and confidence. The dance and movement was executed superbly from this very committed group of young people. Every ensemble member developed a ‘character’ and maintained it well throughout the production. The set depicting an apocalyptic landscape - aided by some remarkable lighting effects - was very dramatic and being a static set made for ease of scene changes. The two tier levels gave lots of scope for action in different parts of the set. The bleak feeling of the piece was admirably captured in the design. The old car was an inspired addition to the set. Once again I was bowled over by this group’s energy and commitment to their art. This was an amazing evening of musical theatre and I look forward to seeing your next production in 2019.
