The 1990 tragic romance film Ghost became a 2011 stage musical in the West End and is a challenging choice for Amateur Theatre. The adaption to the stage creates an episodic narrative with forty-one scenes listed in the programme, requires some clever illusions to create the supernatural world and a central relationship between Molly and Sam that must emotionally connect with the audience. Crowthorne Musical Players rise to this challenge magnificently recreating the classic moments with great skill to engage and draw the audience into the story telling.

The show is slickly staged with smooth fast transitions between scenes and an effective set design that gives depth, with back projections, height to provide variation in settings and two excellent trucks to set the couple’s apartment. They make bold attempts to recreate the key illusions in a satisfying way. The Director uses the space well in his blocking to create distinctive areas for each setting and allow for simultaneous set striking and setting to keep the action flowing.

However, the key to the success of the show is the relationship between Molly and Sam which has to be passionate and believable in their early scenes together and then convey the sadness, frustration, and uncertainty of their relationship after he is murdered. CMP is fortunate to have two actors who conveyed their love and heartbreak beautifully and convincingly throughout.
