Whitby Amateur Dramatic society’s production of George’s Marvellous Medicine is a funny and entertaining theatre production based on the famous story by Roald Dahl. The play follows George (Kenzie Greenwood), a young boy who decides to create a strange medicine for his unpleasant grandmother. What starts as a small experiment quickly turns into a hilarious and chaotic adventure.
One of the best parts of the performance was the acting. The actors brought the characters to life with lots of energy and exaggerated expressions, which made the comedy especially enjoyable.
A small cast of 5, Mum (Jo Downie) played soft with a hit of I might lose my temper at any moment, which was believable. Dad (John McCormack) who was very much the long-suffering son in law to the grizzly grandma, Facial expressions and comic timing on point. And not to forget Tomi Daynes Hall who brought the house down as the giant chicken, the children in the audience loved these moments.
George played brilliantly by Kenzie Greenwood was particularly entertaining, throughout the performance she had the fourth wall broken and the audience chanting along with her. because of his curiosity and determination to make the medicine. Grandma (Suzy Corrigan) was also a memorable character not just because she was bossy, dramatic and made the audience laugh but from the moment she entered the theatre on her rather special mobility scooter to her soaring into the air as she grew, the audience couldn’t take their eyes off her. A bit like George she was present on stage all the time, even when asleep. You believed she was a nasty old lady great acting.
The set and costumes also helped make the production exciting. The stage was set in to four areas Bathroom, kitchen, Georges Bedroom and Dads shed. unusual props created a fun atmosphere for the making of the medicine, while the different costumes helped the audience understand each character. The special effects used when George grandma grew added to the excitement and made the scenes feel surprising.
The play was also very interactive and humorous. There were moments when the audience laughed loudly, especially when things went wrong with George’s medicine. The actors used funny voices, movements and facial expressions to keep everyone interested. The fast pace of the story meant that there was always something happening.
I really enjoyed George’s Marvellous Medicine. It was funny, energetic and full of imagination. As always a huge well done to those backstage and all the cast and crew.
