Forget-Me-Knot is a wickedly funny, utterly twisty-turny piece which keeps you guessing pretty much from beginning
to end, which only adds to the enjoyment as your own growing suspicions begin to materialise.
Hapless businessman, Robert Zeinfeld is found by the police wandering the streets of Leicester at 4am. He has a
bruised head and is suffering with amnesia with no more idea than any member of the audience of how he got
there.
Although the action makes the odd house call into Mrs Zeinfield’s house, Inspector Monroe’s house and a hospital in
Leicester, the bulk of the play is beautifully set in the two primary areas; the office of Inspector Monroe and a police
interview room, both inside Leicester Police Station.
Inspector Monroe is a careworn, jaded copper, who’s seen it all and has the slightly grubby t-shirt to prove it.
He was played with a level of considerable frustration and there are times when you wanted to leap on stage and
pour the poor bloke a drink, particularly as you visit his house after one very arduous day.
There are many comic moments but amongst my favourites are when Insp Monroe – calls off stage to his team,
treating the audience to the facial expressions of someone confident that he’s not being observed, particularly when
addressing his irritating, needling colleague.
Robert is played with the delicious innocence of someone who has no idea what’s going on, although, throughout
the play it becomes clear this innocence was left behind some years ago! The two players had a very funny rapport
although, I would caution against holding Monroe at such a high level of frustration too soon into the piece as it
leaves him nowhere to go. Both Mrs Zeinfield and Samantha where played with relish and confidence each
portraying formidable, feisty people – very nice performance.
Both sound and lighting plots were quite complicated and pivotal to the action – these were well considered and
executed.
The storyline does get a little complicated and during second act, the script develops into, essentially a farce and the
play spirals out of the realms of believable circumstances which make it memorable.
Forget-Me-Knot is full of pace, wit and humour – nicely planned, great acting and a clever little play. A lovely way to
spend an evening, thank you Wells Little Theatre!
