For The Love Of Music

Wombwell & District Amateur Operatic Society provided audiences with an excellent evenings entertainment with their latest offering, For The Love Of Music.

This was a well put together concert, with songs from old favourites including Kiss Me, Kate and Oklahoma to more modern musicals like Waitress and Avenue Q.

The children of the society also had a chance to shine with songs from Annie and Matilda. It’s great to see societies encouraging children to get involved in such a worthwhile pastime. 

The set which was designed and painted by the members perfectly fit the show and I particularly loved the pull down show cloth and the revolving portals. 

It was such a nice gesture of the society to put in a tribute to the late and great Doris Day. Sally Bainbridge performed Doris’s most famous song, Secret Love with with great passion. I wonder if any other audience members thought that Sally had a look of Julia Roberts in her red dress? The Letter from Billy Elliott, was beautifully performed that it reduced me to tears. Such an emotional song and delivered well. 

Newcomer to the company, Kim Broadhead, was captivating. Every move she  made and every note she sang was on point. I for one couldn’t keep my eyes off her.

However the standout performance for me was A Thousand Miles, sang and signed by the entire company. This was a truly stunning moment. Well done to Musical Director Luke Grainger for the beautiful harmonies. 

The production team should be really proud of yourself. The choreography was some of the best I’ve seen by this talented group.
